My Diary

Well, what can I say - Jacob is now back home after just 17 days in Transplant (the stage which follows High-Dose Chemotherapy and Stem Cell Transplant). I say ‘just’ as the record at Alder Hey is three weeks and many children can spend up to six weeks in Transplant. Jacob has amazed the medical staff (and us) with how well he has tolerated his treatment. We know he is a real fighter, but we really did not expect him to get through his treatment so soon and with relatively few complications.

Myself and Nicky would like to thank all the staff at Alder Hey who looked after Jacob during his treatment, they were incredible and really couldn’t do enough for us. I became very emotional as I left hospital today with Jacob, my thoughts turned to other children who are not so fortunate with their treatment and I know that things could have been very different for Jacob.

Although back home Jacob is quite fragile and we are now feeding him via his nasal gastric tube, whilst slowly introducing him to taking food and drink orally. This is a slow process and will probably take several weeks before he is back on a normal diet. He is also likely to require the occasional blood and platelet transfusion until his blood counts recover fully.

The next stage of Jacob’s treatment will be radiotherapy. The scope of this treatment will be determined by the results of Jacob’s next scans. We have no date for these yet, and to be honest don’t really want to think about this....that dreaded wait for the results etc. We have been apart for the last month and being back together is wonderful. We can forget about the other stuff, at least for a short while......

17 Days!
