My Diary

Well, we still don't have full results from Jacob's treatment in London. I’ll say no more about this, although you may detect we are not too pleased about the delay! What is positive though, is that there may now have been some improvement in Jacob’s cancer located in his bones. I say ‘may’. This contention has arisen as a result of different scans undertaken by different hospitals and some suggestion that there may have been a late response to his previous chemotherapy.

Surgery to remove Jacob's primary tumour is scheduled for the 14th February at Alder Hey Hospital. However, we won't know if this will go ahead until the morning of the actual day! This is because various results will  not be fully available to the medical team until the day before surgery. If there is not enough, or any, improvement in Jacob’s cancer, the surgery will not go ahead. If this is the case, we will be devastated as we don't know if UK treatment will then hold out any hope for Jacob.

The waiting is pure torture. On the day of surgery we will have to get ourselves to Alder Hey first thing in the morning, to prepare for the surgery, not actually knowing if this will go ahead or not. Jacob will have a further bone marrow biopsy and CT scan on the 6th February. The results from these will help our medical team to make their final decision about Jacob’s surgery.

Despite everything, we just have to focus on enjoying our time with Jacob and making sure that he has lots of fun. We are blessed that he remains well in himself and is still at this stage able to live a relatively normal life. The infection in Jacob’s Hickman Line has hopefully now cleared up.

We are still totally focussed on fundraising for treatment in USA etc as we always want to have a back up plan for Jacob. Even if he achieves remission through his UK treatment there is something like a 70% chance that his cancer would return as Neuroblastoma is extremely aggressive. Relapsed neuroblastoma is not treated in the UK, so options in USA etc would then, and this is no exaggeration, be Jacob’s only chance of life!

As Clear As Mud!
